Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as the Mormon Church) gave a talk in the October 2017 General Conference about the priesthood and the Savior’s atoning power.

In his talk given in the semi-annual General Conference held in Salt Lake City, Utah near Temple Square, Elder Renlund talks about the mission of a rocket and how it compares to the priesthood. He also emphasizes the power of the atonement of Jesus Christ in realizing the power of the priesthood.

He says, “For Heavenly Father’s purposes to be accomplished, Christ’s atoning power needs to be made available to God’s children. The priesthood delivers these opportunities.”

Basilica of Bom Jesus | Goa | Tomb of St. Francis Xavier | 400+ Years Old Church

Views:351|Rating:5.00|View Time:2:9Minutes|Likes:11|Dislikes:0
The Basilica of Bom Jesus is located in Goa, India, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The basilica holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier. The church is located in Old Goa, which was the capital of Goa in the early days of Portuguese rules.
The Jesuit church is India’s first minor basilica, and is considered to be one of the best examples of baroque architecture in India. The church was consecrated in May 1605 by the archbishop, Dom Fr. Aleixo de Menezes. This world heritage monument has emerged as a landmark in the history of Christianity. It contains the body of St. Francis Xavier, a very close friend of St. Ignatius Loyola with whom he founded the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits).

This is one of the oldest churches in Goa and in India. The floor is of marble inlaid with precious stones. Apart from the elaborate gilded altars, the interior of the church is simple. The main altar holds a large statue of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), and one of Francis Xavier’s companions whose words drew him to a reformed life. “What does it profit a man,” Ignatius had asked Francis, “if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?”

The Baroque style main altar is gilded and bears the statue of Ignatius of Loyola standing between Solomonic pillars above which is the name of Jesus in the IHS monogram and the Holy Trinity
The gaze of the gilded statue of Ignatius of Loyola is fixed upwards in awe at the name of Jesus (IHS) on the gilded emblem of the Jesuits, encircled in radiant rays. Over the emblem, is the Holy Trinity -Father, Son and Spirit – the ultimate muse and focus of the pious Christian. The altar table which is used in Holy mass is gilded and adorned with the figures of Christ and his apostles at the Last Supper, along with the words “Hi Mhoji Kudd”, which in Konkani means “This is my Body”, from the Institution Narrative.

The church also holds paintings of scenes taken from the life of St. Francis Xavier. The mausoleum, on the top of which is placed the silver casket with the body of St. Francis Xavier (1696), was the gift of the last of the Medicis, Cosimo III, the Grand Duke of Tuscany.

The mausoleum was designed by the 17th-century Florentine sculptor Giovanni Battista Foggini. It took ten years to complete. The casket containing his body is made of silver. The holy relics of the saint are displayed every ten years during the anniversary of the saint’s death. His liturgical feast is 3 December.

On the upper level, overlooking the tomb, is the Bom Jesus Basilica Art Gallery, containing the works of the Goan surrealist painter, Dom Martin.

Author and fellow Jesuit Anthony De Mello was also from Goa and mentions the basilica in his writings. The body is shown every ten years

The Basilica of Bom Jesus is more than 408 years old and is open to the public every day. The body of St. Francis Xavier is in a well-decorated casket, which can be seen in the photographs below. Solemn exhibitions of the ‘body’ are held every ten years. Some photos taken inside the church are attached for better understanding of the art work of that time. These art works are called “murals”.

Rock of Southwest Denver – Membership Class – A Little Vision by Bruce Fosdick, Pastor

Communication of the vision of the Rock of Southwest Denver church to attendees of the membership class and those considering becoming members, by Bruce Fosdick, Senior Pastor.
Filmed, edited, and produced by Brian Dehn.

Transcript: “I’d like to pass a little vision along to you. I’m a big proponent that when you go through and understand the history of where God has taken us as a church, you can also better understand who we are today and where God’s taking us in the future. Well, we are a church that was founded in 1954. It was called Jewel Baptist Church. A couple years later, they actually changed their name to Southwest Baptist Church. As the years went on, it became a church that would sometimes get to be 250, 200, then it would move down to 100, and they would try to grow again and then they would decline. As the years went on, they finally became a church of decline. By 1999, there was only about 90 people, most of them senior citizens, who would call Southwest Baptist their home church. But there was something special about these people. Though they knew that maybe the culture had passed them by, though they knew that maybe they weren’t as relevant to the culture as they should be, that didn’t stop them from desiring to actually still reach the culture. Many of them wanted to reach their grandkids and their kids, and they wanted to reach people they didn’t know — they just didn’t know how to do it. Well, they decided to call up a young pastor in California, a college pastor which was me, and ask me to become their Senior Pastor. Well, to be honest with you, I didn’t really have any desire to be a Senior Pastor at that time, or desire to be a Senior Pastor of a church of seniors. But as we continued to talk, a ‘marriage’ issue will have started to come about. We started to realize that the same desire to reach people was the heart of both of us, and so we came up with a plan. Why don’t we do a ‘restart’, which really means that you take an old established church and then you restart it, reignite it, almost like a church plant. In fact, we treated it just like a church plant. And so on Easter 2000, after sent lots of mailers and went door to door, we had prayer vigils, we invited our friends, we started small groups, on Easter 2000 250 people showed up. We couldn’t believe it, it was awesome! As these years have gone on, we’ve actually found ourselves growing numerically and spiritually in ways that couldn’t imagine. We ended up having to move into a new building in 2003, continued to grow and outgrow our building, and so we came up with another concept. We need to be a church that plants churches. I don’t if you’ve heard this statistic before, but it’s pretty daunting: A church will bring more people to the Lord in its first five years than it will in the rest of its history combined. The average church will bring more people to the Lord in its first five years than it will in the rest of its history. Now, that’s not true of every church, and in our case it so far has not been that true. We obviously are still bringing people to the Lord but not at the same level as we did the first five years. So, church planting is the way to go. Each church that we plant has actually been growing and growing and growing. What we do is we send 100 people off and we send them with a Pastor, and we go “Here you go!” So far, we have three church that have been growing very well and we have right the plan to do another one by the year 2012. Also, the other concept that we have is that we’re a mission-minded church. We believe that God cares about the world, and so inside our church we’re raising up missionaries and sending them out. That’s who we are, that’s our heart. I wanted to pass along a little bit of that vision to you so that you can understand where we’ve been, who we are today, and where God is growing us in the future. I so pray that you want to be a part of this and are a part of this, because God’s role and goal in this church is huge and His vision is daunting. And, we need all of us to be on board to make sure we are reaching this world for Jesus Christ. Thank you for your commitment, and thank you for blessing this church. May we continue to bless you.”
